Notes from the CD Album by Andrew Lloyd Weber below

This album contains all of my songs that Sarah Brightman premiered and many others which she performs in the concert The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Sarah was 19 when she played a kitten in my musical Cats, Even then I was struck by the huge range in her voice and a collaboration began between us that continues 12 years later.

Four of the songs that she premiered are included in their original hit versions; one song from The Phantom of The Opera, 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' is re-recorded. I believe it shows just-how much she has developed in the last few years.

Sarah and I were married between 1984 and 1990, and during that time I wrote two musicals, Phantom and Aspects of Love and my setting of the Latin Requiem Mass.

She of course premiered Requiem and created the role 'Christine' in Phantom. Subsequently she was acclaimed in both London and New York when she played 'Rose' in Aspects of Love, a role that I hope she will recreate on film.

It is perhaps easier to write what I feel about Sarah's talent now that we are no longer married. I believe her voice is unique in its range and quality and that her sense of pitch is the truest I have ever worked with. Over the past decade she has developed into one of the most remarkable musical theatre performers I have heard and I believe many of her interpretations of my music on this album will prove to be definitive.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Tim Rice. from the musical Evita

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection and Surrender as No llores por mí Argentina.

This song was in Sarah's concert repertoire for a number of years.

It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you

I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seems to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me

Don't cry for me Argentina

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me
To know that every word is true

Don't cry for me Argentina

Another Suitcase In Another Hall

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Tim Rice. from the musical Evita

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection

I don't expect my love affairs to last for long
Never fool myself that my dreams will come true
Being used to trouble I anticipate it
But all the same I hate it -- wouldn't you?

So what happens now?
       Another suitcase in another hall
So what happens now?
Take your picture off another wall
Where am I going to?
You'll get by, you always have before
Where am I going to?

Time and time again I've said that I don't care
That I'm immune to gloom, that I'm hard through and through
But every time it matters all my words desert me
So anyone can hurt me -- and they do

So what happens now?
       Another suitcase in another hall
So what happens now?
Take your picture off another wall
Where am I going to?
You'll get by you always have before
Where am I going go?

Call in three months time and I'll be fine I know
Well maybe not that fine, but I'll survive anyhow
I won't recall the names and places of this sad occasion
But that's no consolation -- here and now

So what happens now?
       Another suitcase in another hall
So what happens now?
Take your picture off another wall
Where am I going to?
You'll get by, you always have before
Where am I going to?
       Don't ask anymore

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Surrender the Unexpected Songs and Love Changes Everything.

Everything's Alright

Mary Magdalene (Sarah Brightman)

Try not to get worried Try not to turn on to Problems that upset you  (oh) Don't you know Everything's alright  Yes everything's fine And we want you to sleep well tonight Let the world turn without you tonight If we try We'll get by So forget all about us tonight

Apostles' Women

Everything's all right Yes everything's all right yes

Mary Magdalene

Sleep and I shall soothe you Calm you and anoint you Myrrh for your hot forehead (oh) Then you'll feel Everything's all right Yes everything's fine And it's cool and the ointment's sweet For the fire in your head and feet Close your eyes Close your eyes And relax Think of nothing tonight

Apostles' Women

Everything's all right Yes everything's all right yes

Judas (Gary Martin)

Woman your fine ointment Brand new and expensive Could have been saved for the poor Why has it been  wasted? We could have raised maybe Three hundred silver pieces or more People who are hungry People who are starving They matter more Than your feet and hair

Mary Magdalene

Try not to get worried Try not to turn on to Problems that upset you  (oh) Don't you know Everything's all right  Yes everything's fine And we want you to sleep well tonight Let the world turn without you tonight If we try We'll get by So forget all about us tonight

Apostles' Women

Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

Jesus (Bogdan Kominowksi)

Surely you're not saying We have the resources To save the poor from  their lot? There will be poor always Pathetically struggling Look at the good things you've got! Think While you still have me Move While you still see me You'll be lost You'll be so, so sorry When I'm gone

Mary Magdalene

Sleep and I shall soothe you Calm you and anoint you Myrrh for your hot forehead (oh) then you'll feel Everything's alright Yes everything's fine And it's cool and the ointment's sweet For the fire in your head and feet Close your eyes close your eyes And relax Think of nothing tonight

Apostles' Women & Mary Magdalene

Close your eyes Close your eyes And relax  Think of nothing tonight

Men

Everything's all right Yes everything's all right yes

I Don't Know How To Love Him

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Tim Rice. from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Surrender the Unexpected Songs and Love Changes Everything.

I don't know how to love him, What to do, how to move him. I've been changed, yes, really changed. In these past few days when I've seen myself I seem like someone else.

I don't know how to take this I don't see why he moves me. He's a man, he's just a man. And I've had so many men before In very many ways: He's just one more

Should I bring him down? Should I scream and shout? Should I speak of love - let my feelings out? I never thought I'd come to this - what's it all about?

Don't you think it's rather funny I should be in this position? I'm the one who's always been
So calm, so cool, no lover's fool Running every show He scares me so.

I never thought I'd come to this - what's it all about

Yet, if he said he loved me I'd be lost, I'd be frightened. I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope.
I'd turn my head, I'd back away, I wouldn't want to know - He scares me so. I want him so. I love him so.

Memory

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Trevor Nunn, after T.S. Eliot. from the musical Cats - where Sarah played Jemima.

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection and  Surrender the Unexpected Songs & Encore as Piano (sung in Italian)   Memory first appeared in Sarah's recrodings as the B side to the single Him.

Memory

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her mem'ry?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Mem'ry
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
Life was beautiful then
I remember
The time I knew what happiness was
Let the mem'ry live again

Ev'ry street lamp
Seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And a street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new life will begin

Burnt out ends of smokey days
The stale cold smell of morning
The street lamp dies
Another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with my mem'ry
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look a new day has begun ...

Any Dream Will Do

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Tim Rice from the musical - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection and Love Changes Everything

I closed my eyes, drew back the curtain To see for certain, what I thought I knew. Far, far away, someone was weeping, But the world was sleeping.  Any dream will do.

I wore my coat, with golden lining, Bright colours shining, wonderful and new. And in the east, the dawn was breaking, And the world was waking.
Any dream will do.

A crash of drums, a flash of light, My golden coat, flew out of sight. The colours faded into darkness, I was left alone.

May I return to the beginning? The light is dimming, and the dream is too. The world and I, we are still waiting, Still hesitating. Any dream will do.

Any dream, any dream, .... any dream will do Any dream, any dream, .... any dream will do

Anything But Lonely

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Don Black, Charles Hart from the musical - Aspects Of Love.

Sarah starred in both in London's west End and in the USA as Rose Vibert, sadly no official soundtrack exists with her singing this part.

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection.

Sarah also released this song as a single in 7", 12" and CD formats.

Anything but lonely,  Anything but empty rooms. There's so much in life to share -- What's the sense when no one else is there?

Anything but lonely,  Anything but only me. Quiet years in too much space: That's the thing that's hard to face, And ...

You have a right to go,  But you should also know That I won't be alone for long. Long days with nothing said
Are not what lie ahead -- I'm sorry, but I'm not that strong.

Anything but lonely,  Anything but passing time. Lonely's what I'll never be, While there's still some life in me,  And ...

I'm still young, don't forget, It isn't over yet -- So many hearts for me to thrill. If you're not here to say
How good I look each day, I'll have to find someone who will.

Anything but lonely,  Anything but empty rooms.
There's so much in life to share -- What's the sense when no one else is there ...? What's the sense when no one else is there ...?

Love Changes Everything

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Don Black, Charles Hart from the musical - Aspects Of Love.

Sarah starred both in London's west End and in the USA as Rose Vibert, sadly no official soundtrack exists with her singing this part.

This song appears on the following SB albums - As I Came Of Age, Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection.

Love, love changes everything: hands and faces, earth and sky. Love, love changes everything: how you live and how you die. Love can make the summer fly, or a night seem like a lifetime. Yes, love, love changes everything, now I tremble at your name. Nothing in the world will ever be the same.

Love, love changes everything: days are longer, words mean more. Love, love changes everything: pain is deeper than before. Love will turn your world around, and that world will last forever. Yes, love, love changes everything, brings you glory, brings you shame. Nothing in the world will ever be the same.

Off into the world we go, planning futures, shaping years. Love bursts in and suddenly all our wisdom disappears. Love makes fools of everyone: all the rules we make are broken. Yes, love, love changes everything: live or perish, in its flame. Love will never ever let you be the same.  Love will never ever let you be the same.

Tell Me On A Sunday

Written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Don Black.

From Tell me on a Sunday & Song and Dance.  Sarah starred in this and a video was recorded and released.

Sadly the Song & Dance video has long been deleted.

Don't write a letter when you want to leave Don't call me at 3 a.m. from a friend's apartment I'd like to choose how I hear the news Take me to a park that's covered with trees Tell me on a Sunday please

Let me down easy No big song and dance No long faces, no long looks No deep conversation I know the way we should spend that day Take me to a zoo that's got chimpanzees tell me on a Sunday please

Don't want to know who's to blame It won't help knowing Don't want to fight day and night Bad enough you're going

Don't leave in silence with no word at all Don't get drunk and slam the door That's no way to end this I know how I want you to say goodbye Find a circus ring with a flying trapeze Tell me on a Sunday please

Don't want to fight day and night bad enough you're going Don't leave in silence with no word at all Don't get drunk and slam the door that's no way to end this I know how I want you to say goodbye

Don't run off in the pouring rain Don't call me as they call your plane Take the hurt out of all the pain Take me to a park that's covered with trees Tell me on a Sunday please

Phantom of the Opera with Steve Harley

Christine (Sarah)

Beneath the opera house I know he's there. He's with me on the stage, He's everywhere. And when my song begins, I always find
The phantom of the opera is there
Inside my mind.

The phantom (Steve)

Sing once again with me
Our strange duet.
My power over you
Grows stronger yet.
You'll give your love to me
For love is blind.
The phantom of the opera is now
Your mastermind.

Christine

Those who have seen your face
Draw back in fear;
I am the mask you wear,

The phantom

It's me they hear.

Christine / Phantom

Your/My spirit and my/your voice
In one combined
The phantom of the opera is there
Inside my/your mind

Choir (very, very soft)

The phantom of the opera
Is there
The phantom of the opera

The phantom

Sing once again with me
Our strange duet.
My power over you
Grows stronger yet.

Christine / Phantom

I'll/You'll give my/your love to you/me
For love is blind.
The phantom of the opera is now
My/Your mastermind.

The phantom (spoken)

Sing, my angel of music ...

Christine

He's there,
The phantom of the opera.

Christine starts wailing

The phantom (spoken)

Sing ...
Once again with me, our strange duet.
My power over you grows stronger and stronger.
Sing ...
My angel of music/
Sing!
Sing our strange duet -
Sing!

Christine continues wailing,
and keeps on wailing after every
sentence the Phantom sings

The phantom (spoken)

The phantom of the opera
Is now your mastermind;
I am here, inside your mind!
I am everywhere!
You're in my power.
Sing!
Sing, my angel of music!
Sing! Sing!

All I ask of you with Cliff Richard

Raoul (Cliff)

No more talk of darkness, forget these wide-eyed fears; I'm here, nothing can harm you, my words will warm and calm you. Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears; I'm here, with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you.

Christine (Sarah)

Say you'll love me ev'ry waking moment; turn my head with talk of summertime. Say you need me with you now and always; promise me that all you say is true, that's all I ask of you.

Raoul

Let me be your shelter, let me be your light; you're safe, no one will find you, your fears are far behind you.

Christine

All I want is freedom, a world with no more night; and you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me.

Raoul

Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime; let me lead you from your solitude. Say you want me with you, here beside you, anywhere you go, let me go too, that's all I ask of you.

Christine

Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime.

Together

Say the word and I will follow you. Share each day with me, each night, each morning.

Christine

Say you love me ...

Raoul

You know I do.

Together:

Love me, that's all I ask of you ...  Love me, that's all I ask of you.

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Don Black, Charles Hart from the musical - Phantom of the Opera.

Sarah starred star both in London's west End and in the USA as Christine Daae.

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection and Surrender the Unexpected Songs.

You were once my one companion You were all that mattered You were once a friend and father Then my world was shattered

Wishing you were somehow here again Wishing you were somehow near Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed Somehow you would be here

Wishing I could hear your voice again
Knowing that I never would Dreaming of you won't help me to do
All that you dreamed I could

Passing bells and sculpted angels Cold and monumental Seem for you the wrong companions You were warm and gentle

Too many years fighting back tears Why can't the past just die?

Wishing you were somehow here again Knowing we must say goodbye
Try to forgive, teach me to live Give me the strength to try

No more memories, no more silent tears No more gazing across the wasted years Help me say goodbyeHelp me say goodbye

The Music of the Night

written by Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics: Don Black, Charles Hart from the musical - Phantom of the Opera.

Sarah starred both in London's west End and in the USA as Christine Daae.

This song appears on the following SB albums - Sarah Brightman Sings the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection and Surrender the Unexpected Songs, Classics and Diva.

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation Darkness stirs and wakes imagination Silently the senses abandon their defences

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender Turn your face away from the garish light of day Turn your face away from cold, unfeeling light And listen to the music of the night

Close you eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar And you'll live as you've never lived before

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind In this darkness which you know you cannot fight The darkness of the music of the night

Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before Let your soul take you where you long to go Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in To the harmony which dreams alone can write The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight Help me make the music of the night
