Welcome to Sarah Brightman's Harem; A musical fantasy becomes a visual feast.
"I wanted to do something with
a middle eastern percussive feel to it and as I Visual images were always a
part of Sarah Bright-marts inspiration for Harem. "I have always been
fascinated by the desert the space and feeling of spirituality that the
emptiness and huge vaulted skies bring and at the same time/ those magical
images of the Arabian Nights with their princesses and palaces."
Those stories were my favourite reading as a child" says the soprano "and so when I came to start work on this my latest project I. went back to those glorious Technicolor pictures that had remained with me."
I wanted to do something with a middle eastern percussive feel to it and as I listened to Turkish, Indian and Middle Eastern music especially some of the dance orientated things that are being produced the whole concept of the album and the show began to be clear to me - the idea of parallel worlds of mystery and the faraway lands of legend and myth all lent themselves to what I wanted to create musically - the sensuous dance rhythms the wonderful melodies and fantastic range of instruments and sounds
Sarah Brightman is a musical phenomenon. Her blockbuster albums .Dive, Time to say Goodbye, Eden, La Luna and Classics have sold more than a staggering 15.000.000 copies worldwide and her concerts are famous for their rich creativity.
"The variety of styles that Sarah Brightman's career has encompassed is astonishing revealing her multi-facetted talents: Starting as a child performer she went on to study music theory with classical vocal training in the 'modo bel canto' and at the age of 18, was already a successful recording artist as well as a professional dancer; combining her vocal talents with her ability as an actress she moved on to become the undisputed queen of musical theatre — Cats and Phantom of the Opera to name but two of the productions she starred in - and in yet another career move has become known as the first artist to fully develop the genre of classical cross-over a term which however the Grammy nominated soprano finds restrictive:
" I've always been known for interpreting beautiful music that I really like and I find that certain pieces fit into different areas at different times; what I mean to say is that I can hear "modern" treatments to "Classical" pieces. If you think of how Opera was viewed in the past you will see that it was always about popular reception/ there was no elitism then and I don't see why there should be now. Even the term, "Classical" has overtones that I don't, really agree with/ you wouldn't class Stravinsky and Brahms together in musical terms and yet they are both "classical" composers. What I have done is to take fantastic melodies and interpret them in my own way."
But Sarah Brightman's music is not just about re-working classical pieces her albums are to be found' in the pop cross over and dance charts revealing an eclecticism on the part of her public that testifies to the breadth of her appeal.
Talking about the work that goes on before a tour begins Sarah says: "When I start on a project I think of it in its entirety so having begun with the music I go on to study other related aspects of the theme — I mean paintings and literature, poetry, dance, anything that will help to bring it all to life; its hard work sometimes but immensely satisfying "I think that the fact of having been in dance and musical theatre gives me a unique take on the way that my music needs to be presented visually" "I have a very clear picture in my head of how i want my shows to look7'' says the artist whose tours of the albums Eden and La Luna have delighted audiences around the world ''I'm involved with all the aspects of my shows, working closely with my design team on the choreography, stage set, lighting and sound.
HAREM has the pulse and colour and cinematic feel to it that represent the singer's fascination with rhythm and melody and the fusion of different cultures into a seamless musical whole.
