SARAH BRIGHTMAN

Sarah Brightman made her theatrical debut at the age of 13 in / and Albert at the Piccadilly Theatre, London. At 16, she was a member of the dance group Pan's People and then at 18, she joined Arlene Philips' dance group Hot Gossip.

 

Sarah was a member of the original cast of Cats at the New London Theatre. In 1982, she premiered Charles Strouse's opera for children The Nightingale at the Buxton Festival, a role she repeated at the Lyric, Hammersmith. In 1985 she premiered Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem in New York and London, for which she received a Grammy nomination as Best New Classical Artist. In the same year she played the role of Valencienne in The Merry Widow for New Sadler's Wells Opera.

 

Sarah created the role of Christine in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, which opened at Her Majesty's Theatre, London in October 1986 and when she premiered the role in the Broadway production in 1988 she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award.

 

A successful recording artist, Sarah's UK top-ten singles include / Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper (1978), Pie Jesu (1985), All I Ask of You (1986), The Phantom of the Opera (1987) and Amigos Para Siempre (1992) with Jose Carreras. She has had two number-one albums, Requiem (classical charts 1985) and The Phantom of the Opera (1985) and is featured on the cast albums of The Nightingale (1982) and Song & Dance (1984). In early 1988, Miss Brightman made a recording of the folk songs of Benjamin Britten (on the HMV/Angel label) and portrayed Carrie on the new MCA recording of Carousel. Her 1989 solo album, The Songs that Got Away was also successful in both Britain and the U.S. She has recently completed a forthcoming album of songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber entitled Surrender - The Unexpected Songs.

 

Sarah's live performances include engagements at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow (with Moscow Philharmonic Society Orchestra) and the Orchard Hall in Tokyo. She has starred in Aspects of Love both in London and on Broadway and has toured the U.S., Japan, Canada and England in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sarah performed the 1992 Olympic Games theme song with Jose Carreras in Barcelona.

 

In 1992, she played the name role in Trelawney of the 'Wells' at the Comedy Theatre, before going on to star in Noel Coward's Relative Values at the 1993 Chichester Festival, which subsequently transferred to the Savoy Theatre in the West End. At the end of last year, she played Sally Driscoll in Dangerous Obsess/on. Her most recent appearance was as Miss Giddens in The Innocents at the Haymarket. Sarah has been performing classical concerts in Japan with Placido Domingo.
